Name: |
Lady Penelope Devereux
Title:
Baroness Rich
What family do you have with you on Progress?
My daughters Essex and Isabella, my sons Robert and Mountjoy, my sister Dorothy, and my many cousins...oh, yes, and my Mother on occasion.
Who is your chief ally on this Progress?
I have many allies, all carefully selected and cleverly concealed until I need call upon them.
Who is your enemy on this Progress?
Never divulge your enemies, silly. It is best to treat all as friends, and keep them close, where you can better watch them and plot their demise....and then you can watch that! Isn't that splendid!
Why are you on Progress?
Besides attending upon Her Majesty, being on Progress keeps me far from home. I am rarely free to visit there, and my husband Lord Rich is rarely asked to come to Court, or join us upon Progress, which suits me very well indeed.
Why are you at Court?
Her Majesty requests that I remain with Her as a Lady of the Bedchamber. It also allows me the freedom to visit our families many homes, and to entertain without the burden of my husband, who is an oaf..and a Puritan.

Three (3) facts that we know about you and can talk or react about:
Fact1:
I have a longstanding friendship with Baron Mountjoy. ...we have several children together(eight out of nine, to be exact..), which my husband wisely claims as his own, though all the world knows differently. My husband is a Puritan, he is a bully and everyone who knows him dislikes him. He claims my children as his own, and provides me with all I wish, because he wants to curry the Queens favor..and he fears my brother and Lord Leicester if he does not.
Fact2:
I shamelessly pursue the advancement of my children, in all things. My sons are handsome and eloquent, and when they visit I keep them as close to Her Majesty as I can manage. My daughters are beautiful and charming, and I am always entertaining prospective suitors for them.
Fact3:
I entertain extensively and frequently, and host a great many diverse guests at Essex House..I am the Queens fingers on the pulse of society(polite and otherwise) and I share information with Her freely to Her(and my) best advantage. A Devereux dinner party is a social and political event not to be missed. If one has the opportunity to attend, I highly encourage it. It is so choice.

What ONE thing can YOU (the actor) tell us/show us about your character that you want us to 'see' when we play off of you?:
Penelope Devereux is an independent, intelligent and ambitious woman. She is charming and clever..and is always thinking of how she can best utilize the people around her to achieve her objectives. The advancement of her children is her highest priority, and she is fiercely protective of them. She is the quintessential hostess, and loves intrigue. She is the driving force behind a great many scandals, but stays far enough away from the actual plot, once hatched, to remain unscathed by any repercussions.
